1 Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession; 2 He was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was in all His house. 3 For He has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by just so much as the builder of the house has more honor than the house. 4 For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God. 5 Now Moses was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken later; 6 but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house—whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end. – Hebrews 3:1-6
All believers experience spiritual dry spells or seasons of drifting from God. During these times, the Holy Spirit faithfully leads us toward pathways of renewal and restoration. One way he does this is by giving us a fresh revelation of Jesus.
The Apostle Paul describes this work of the Spirit this way in 2 Corinthians 3:18 (NIV):
"And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit."
The recipients of the Book of Hebrews had experienced a powerful transformation through the gospel and the Spirit of God. However, due to persecution and pressure, some began to drift from their confidence in Christ. Others were tempted to revert to the old covenant practices under the law of Moses, essentially attempting a Messiah-less walk with God. They were in danger of failing to move on to maturity in Christ.
The author knew they needed a fresh revelation of who Jesus was. They needed to see Jesus as superior to the angels, the prophets, and even Moses.
The author argues that Jesus is superior to Moses in three important areas:
The Builder of God’s House (Hebrews 3:3-4): Jesus is more glorious than Moses because He is the builder of God's house, which refers to the people, not a physical structure.
The Fulfillment of Moses' Testimony (Hebrews 3:5): Moses was faithful as a servant in God’s house, but his ministry pointed forward to Jesus, the greater revelation.
The Faithful Ruler of God’s House (Hebrews 3:6a): Jesus is not only the builder but also the ruler of God’s house. He is the heir of the household of God, with the right to rule due to His faithfulness.
Steps to Receive and Maintain a Fresh Revelation of Jesus:
The author of Hebrews gives us three key commands to help us receive and maintain a revelation of Jesus in a confusing and complex culture:
1. Consider Your Calling from Jesus
Hebrews 3:1a - "Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling,"
The author calls the believers "holy brethren," emphasizing that this message applies to those who have come to faith in Jesus. Believers are "partakers" or "partners" in the heavenly calling, meaning they share in Jesus' sufferings and resurrection victory.
The call to salvation is a high and heavenly calling, urging believers to set their minds on things above.
Don’t settle for a mediocre Christian life when you have a high calling.
2. Consider Jesus carefully.
Hebrews 3:1b - "...consider Jesus,"
The word "consider" means to carefully and fully understand. The author encourages believers to give Jesus their complete attention and remember His absolute superiority.
This means focusing on Jesus first thing in the morning, throughout the day, and setting aside specific times for meditation on Him. By doing this, believers will continually receive fresh revelations that can lift them out of spiritual dryness and beyond their spiritual comfort zones.
3. Keep Your Confession of Jesus
Hebrews 3:1c - "...the Apostle and High Priest of our confession;"
Jesus is called the Apostle (representing God to us) and High Priest (representing us to God). He brought salvation to us and intercedes for us before the Father. The author urges believers to maintain their confession of faith in Jesus, acknowledging His unique and irreplaceable role.
"The man who has struggled to purify himself and has had nothing but repeated failures will experience real relief when he stops tinkering with his soul and looks away to the perfect One." – A.W. Tozer
Until next time,
Stay strong in the Lord!
